Religious Freedom National Scenic Byway

More than just a glimpse of history, this National Scenic Byway links together significant historic buildings, landscapes, & waterways in Charles & St. Mary's Counties to present the story of the first government in Colonial America to introduce the concepts of religious tolerance and separation of church and state. These concepts later became enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing all Americans the right to believe as they wish. Many of the nation's oldest churches are along this byway and side trips allow travelers to more deeply explore America's roots of religious tolerance. This interactive timeline will help in journey.
